Materials and finishes,
made clearer.
A growing reference for the techniques, materials and surface effects that shape beauty packaging. Use it to understand the possibilities, compare directions and find the right language for a brief.
01 · DecorationScreen printing
Direct, precise colour applied to the pack surface.
+
Ink is pressed through a fine screen onto the component. It is well suited to logos, lettering and controlled areas of solid colour, especially on cylindrical or gently curved packs.
- Best for
- Clean graphics, opaque colour and durable branding
- Consider
- Artwork detail, colour matching, substrate and print area
02 · DecorationHot stamping
Foil transferred with heat and pressure for a crisp accent.
+
A heated die transfers metallic, pigment or specialist foil onto the pack. The result can create a sharp luxury detail without coating the entire component.
- Best for
- Logos, fine lines, metallic accents and premium cues
- Consider
- Surface geometry, artwork size, foil choice and registration
03 · DecorationLaser marking
A precise mark created directly on the material surface.
+
A laser changes or removes a controlled surface layer to create text, codes or graphics without adding ink or foil. The final contrast depends on the material and any coating beneath it.
- Best for
- Fine detail, permanent coding and understated graphics
- Consider
- Material response, contrast, depth and test results
04 · Material effectPearlescent effect
Soft, shifting luminosity built into colour or coating.
+
Pearlescent pigments can be introduced through the material, colour masterbatch or a surface coating. They reflect light with a softer, more dimensional effect than a flat metallic finish.
- Best for
- Luminous colour, skincare cues and elevated tactile objects
- Consider
- Base colour, pigment scale, opacity and viewing angle
05 · SurfaceMetallisation
A reflective metal-like layer across all or part of a component.
+
A thin deposited layer creates a polished, satin or tinted metallic appearance. Selective masking can combine reflective and uncoated areas for a more architectural result.
- Best for
- High-impact shine, colour-tinted metal and precise contrast
- Consider
- Substrate, masking, topcoat, handling and recyclability goals
06 · SurfaceSoft-touch coating
A low-gloss surface with a velvety hand feel.
+
A specialist coating reduces gloss and changes the tactile impression of the component. It can make simple forms feel warmer and more considered in the hand.
- Best for
- Matte colour, tactile differentiation and restrained luxury
- Consider
- Wear, formula contact, colour shift and compatibility testing
